When Is Florida’s Red Snapper Season in 2022?

Florida’s Red Snapper fishing season for vessels with federal for-hire reef fish permits is 79 days in federal waters of The Gulf of Mexico.

Begins: 12:01 AM, June 1, 2022

Ends: 12:01 AM, August 19, 2022 (Local Time)

Governor Ron DeSantis said:

“Snapper season is one of the most exciting times to be fishing in Florida, and I am excited to announce the longest season since the state took over management of red snapper,”

People travel from all over to enjoy the recreational opportunities we have in Florida that can’t be found anywhere else. Florida is proud to continue providing access and opportunities to all who want to experience the Fishing Capital of the World.”

What Makes Red Snapper Fishing So Great?

Red Snappers are hard fighters! They have a sloped profile with large scales, a spiny dorsal fin and a big, unique face. Every year, anglers of all skill levels head out onto the Gulf to catch these legends.

The main reason? Their taste! They have a delicious, white, soft and flaky texture.

They also put on an exhilarating fight! Out in deep-sea fishing territory, we’ll hook onto Red Snappers swimming at anywhere between 30-300ft!

Then they’ll make sure you get great value for your money! Fighting and shooting in every direction, you’ll feel a rush unlike any other when they finally surface. One thing is guaranteed: Memories that last a lifetime!

If you want to keep your Red Snapper catch, you can!

How Big Are Red Snappers?

Although they don’t grow as big as other popular fish in the Gulf, any Red Snapper catch is one you should be proud of!

Younger anglers may be pushed to their limits, but most people won’t be challenged as much as they will with the likes of a Grouper!

That’s why they’re so popular. Challenging, but mostly it’s just pure fun!

An average Red Snapper will grow to around 25 lbs and between 12-24 inches in length. The Florida record was 46 lbs, caught off the coast of Destin, FL.

Red Snapper Fun Facts:

  • Females lay around 75 million eggs!
  • There are around 110 million Red Snappers in the Gulf alone.
  • Adults feed on small fish, shrimp, crab, worms, octopus and squid.
  • Baby Red Snapper feed on plankton.

What to Do With Red Snapper After You Catch It?

If you want to keep your Red Snapper, your fun isn’t over just yet. After we catch it and remove the hook, we’ll place your catch in on ice immediately.

Then you can take your catch to a nearby restaurant or get it cleaned immediately upon return to shore.

Local chefs do a great job of serving up our guest’s catches. Red Snapper can be broiled, pan-fried, grilled, steamed, deep-fried or baked. It has a distinct nutty and sweet taste that is always delicious.

Where to Catch Red Snapper in Florida?

Red Snapper Season in Florida provides catches throughout The Gulf of Mexico.

But St. Pete Beach and its surrounding areas are considered some of the best spots in the country! People travel here from all around the world, knowing they’ll get an experience unlike any other.

We often find Red Snapper in St. Pete Beach swimming in schools. But when we head out into deep-sea fishing territory, we tend to find trophy-sized Red Snappers that you can brag about for the rest of your life!

There are alternatives if you aren’t keen on an all-day trip into deep-sea fishing waters. Families with young children, for example, can stay close to the coast and catch smaller Red Snappers. These are mostly found around rigs or wrecks, often less than 5 miles from shore.

How to Catch a Red Snapper in Florida?

Red Snapper season sees these hungry beauties bite on pretty much any type of gear and bait. But on our longer trips into deeper waters, we’ll be selective and use lighter tackle. That way we can hook a fish to be proud of with a fun and challenging fight! Shorter trips tend to be suited to heavier rigs for faster results.

Our Captains here at YachtFish Fishing Charters know all the local hotspots around St. Pete Beach and are up to date on the best locations to go for those bucket list experiences!
